Soccer manager is a browser based game which i play very often. You can register for free at http://www.soccermanager.com.

When you start you get to choose 1 team to manage from various setups. You can join the same setup as that of your friends. Every week your team plays a min of 2 matches (Wednesday and Saturday) but your team may also be playing cup games.

Every week your SM points increases and as it goes up you get to manage 2,3 teams and so on.
